Restoration (Part 1)

Isaiah 54 talks of the Restoration of Israel from Babylon after 70 years of captivity. In captivity they are compared to a barren woman – v1-3, and a widow – v 4-6

Their captures would humiliate them and in mockery tell them to sing the Lord’s song. Hence their reply, “How can we sing a song of the LORD in a foreign land?” – Psalms 137:4

Like a barren woman or a widow, they were in shame, disgrace, humiliation, embarrassment, disappointed hope, distressed in spirit, felt rejected and had sadness of the heart.

But God promised that Israel will be restored and their ‘barrenness” (unproductive years) will be no more. He told them to shout for Joy for many will be the children of the barren woman, to enlarge the pace of their tent (make plans and prepare), to stretch out their tents curtains, lengthen the tents cords, and strengthen the tents stakes – v1-3

After God breaks the curse of their shame – barrenness and widowhood – they will be fruitful and expand. Their reproach will be gone, no longer ashamed. After restoration, they will be covered with beauty of a maiden once more v11-12; they will be established and no longer live in fear. God promises to be their husband v4-6 (provider and protector).

This will be their heritage (& our heritage too) so long as they obey the Lord in v17: no weapon forged against you will prevail, and you will refute every tongue that accuses you.
