¬His promises are dependable¬
a. For no matter how many promises God has made, they are “Yes” in Christ. And so through him the “Amen” is spoken by us to the glory of God (1 Corinthians 1:20).
b. God is not human, that he should lie, not a human being, that he should change his mind. Does he speak and then not act? Does he promise and not fulfill? (Numbers 23:19)
God had made a promise to Abraham in Genesis 17:4-6 that he will be a father of many nations, he would be very fruitful and kings would come from him. Same case to Sarah in verse 16 – She will become a mother to a son in old age, she will be the mother of nations and kings will come from her.
v17-19: To Abraham this sounded somehow like a joke or an impossibility. He responded by laughing and said to himself:
a. Will a son be born to man a hundred years old? (A good question from a human perspective).
b. Will Sarah bear a child at the age of ninety? (A logical question).
God responded to Abraham’s 2 questions in verse 19 by saying “YES”.
Sarah did the same in Genesis 18: 13:
She laughed on hearing the news of her being a mother in old age. She said:
“Will I really have a child now that I am old?” (A question of doubt…….she had some faith, but from a human perspective she could not understand how that was possible. We are victims of the same a times).
God responds to her question and asks: “Is anything too hard for the LORD?” (God of the covenant). At the appointed time next year, you will have a son.
What appears impossible with man is possible with God, His ways are not our ways, nor His thoughts our thoughts (Isaiah 55:8-9).
Everything He has promised must come to pass.
When God acts to fulfill his promises man’s logic and reasoning becomes of no use.
Patiently stand on His promises (as declared from Genesis to Revelation); for at the right time He makes everything beautiful. No word spoken by Him will return to him without being fulfilled (Isaiah 55:11). .
