PART 1: “When the foundations are being destroyed, what can the righteous do?” Psalm 11: 3.
Everything is built on a certain foundation, and the destruction of a foundation signifies the end of a building or anything built.
Hebrews 12:27 reminds us that everything that can be shaken – created things/temporal things – will be removed so that only what cannot be shaken can remain – eternal things.
We experience shakeups since everything we see is temporal – strength, fame, jobs, power, friends, wealth etc. As we age, even our bodies experience shake-up. Our mortal bodies become weak and even sick.
Ecclesiastes 12 talks symbolically of how our mortal body is shaken while in this earthly tent we live in, and why we should serve God while still strong:
V 2 – “the sun and the light and the moon and the stars grow dark.” – (Wrinkles appear as we age and facial brightness fades too).
V2 – “the clouds return after the rain.” – (Cognitive ability fades/memory loss, frequent ailments with age).
V3 – “when the keepers of the house tremble.” – (the arms we use for work and to defend the body start to shake, and legs become weak as well).
V 3 – “the strong men stoop.” – (The back becomes weak and bends).
V 3 – “the grinders cease because they are few.” – (We experience teeth loss, and we start eating slowly).
V 3 – “those looking through the windows grow dim.” – (Our eye sight grows dim, and we experience poor eye sight).
V4 – “the doors to the street are closed.” – (Friends become fewer and movements likewise).
V4 – “the sound of grinding fades.” – (Hearing becomes poor).
V4 – “when people rise up at the sound of birds.” – (We can’t sleep, we roll in bed till morning).
V 5 – “when people are afraid of heights, and of dangers in the streets” – (Fear of the unknown and worry that after much toil and wealth accumulation, the heirs to come might squander everything we worked so hard to acquire. Old age comes with many dangers, hence better to stay at home).
V 5 – “when the almond tree blossoms.” – (Gray hair starts appearing).
V 5- “the grasshopper drags itself along.” – (Walking style changes, we hobble around and walk awkwardly/in a dragging manner due to joint pain, aided by walking sticks).
V5 – “and desire no longer is stirred.” – (Pleasures and sexual drive fades and no longer have meaning).
V5 – “Then people go to their eternal home and mourners go about the streets.” – (death and burial follow).
V 6 – “Remember him—before the silver cord is severed.” – (Spinal cord makes breaking sounds and finally the human spirit departs due to disconnect between the body and the spirit).
V6 – “and the golden bowl is broken.” – (The skull cavity is wrecked; everything becomes meaningless).
V6- “before the pitcher is shattered at the spring.” (Urinary tract related problems and wetting of bed like a baby with age).
V6 – “and the wheel broken at the well.” – (Heart and central nervous related problems).
V7 – “and the dust returns to the ground it came from, and the spirit returns to God who gave it.” – (The body returns to the ground, and our spirit goes into eternity).
V13 -14: The teacher/Solomon explicitly states the conclusion as:
“Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the duty of all mankind. v14 For God will bring every deed into judgment, including every hidden thing, whether it is good or evil”.
Life build on the right foundation (Christ) is secure eternally, every other foundation is a shaky ground.
1 Corinthians 3:11 – “For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ.” (NIV).
Psalms 118:22 “The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone”. (NIV).
