” In those days there was no king in Israel; everyone did what was right in his own eyes.” (Judges 17:6 and 21:25 )
410 years of spiritual, political and moral confusion during the rule of the judges (spiritual & political leaders).
There was indeed a king in Israel, the LORD (God of the covenant), who brought them out of slavery in Egypt. They knew about him and his works which are evident; but they chose not to recognize nor honour him.
Similar to our days, people want to do what’s right to their eyes, but that won’t make it right before God.
– It seemed right to the eyes of Adam and Eve to eat the forbidden fruit…. but it was wrong before God.
– It seemed right to the eyes of David to commit adultery and cover it with the murder of Uriah…..but it was wrong before God.
– It seemed right to the eyes of Nadab and Abihu (Aaron’s sons) to offer storage fire before God ……but it was wrong before God.
– It seemed right to the eyes of Judas to betray Jesus…. but it was wrong before God.
It may seem okay even today to do what appears right to our eyes, but it will never be right if it’s contrary to God’s will and word. Follow not your heart (lust of the eye & flesh), follow God’s word (being in God’s will).
