Holy Communion/Lord’s Table/Last Supper/Breaking of Bread/Cup of Blessings/

  1. Brings healing and wholeness
  2. Was instructed by Christ as a memorial of his sacrifice
  3. Is a command
  4. We proclaim his death until he comes.

His death brought:

  • Righteousness apart from the law to all who believe – Romans 3:21-22

  • Adoption as sons – Galatians 3:26
  • Indwelling of Christ in us – Ephesians 3:17
  • Ability to stand fast through the same faith – Romans 11:20
  • Through same faith, we are raised with Christ – Colossians 2:12
  • Inheritance to God’s promise – Hebrews 6:12

1 Corinthians 11:23 – 28

  • Eating of the flesh of the son of man and drinking his blood brings life, eternal life and will be raised to life on the last day.
  • Christ flesh is true food and his blood is true drink.
  • Whoever feeds on his flesh and drinks his blood abides in him and he in him.
  • He is the bread that came from heaven: Manna

A. Breaking of Bread/Body

Christ perfect body (perfect in health and life) was broken, pierced, tattered, tortured on the cross.

On the cross, he took our sickness upon his broken body so that we can live in divine health (Isaiah 53:5, 1Peter 2:24).

His body was broken so that ours would be whole!

Isaiah 53 Exchanges:

V4 – Took up our pain – bore our suffering

V5 – Pierced for our transgressions, crushed for our iniquities, punished so that we could have peace, by his wounds we are healed.

V6b – Our iniquities were laid on him

V8b – Punished for our transgressions

V11b – Justifies us, bore our iniquities

V12c – Made intercession for transgressors

**In remembrance of all this ****

By his blood, he entered into the Holy of Holies (Mercy seat), thus obtaining eternal redemption – Hebrews 9:12 [We receive all the blessings of the New covenant].

***Blood of bulls and goats could not purchase humans, only the blood of Jesus who came in human form ****

**His blood still speaks – Hebrews 12:24 – A better word – Hebrews 11:4

Other references of the blood:

Exodus 12:13 – The blood shall be a sign for you on the house where you are and when I see the blood, I will pass over you. No destructive plague will touch you when I strike Egypt.

C. Proclaiming the Lord’s death until he returns

1 Corinthians 11:26

We should proclaim that Jesus died for sinners by breaking bread.

We should look forward to the promise that Christ will one day return

[Looking back to the cross and looking forward to his return]

Matthew 26:29

Mark 14:25

Isaiah 25:6-8
