Genesis 47:27 – And Israel dwelt in the land of Egypt, in the country of Goshen; and they had possessions therein, and grew, and multiplied exceedingly.
v6, v11 – They were settled in the best part of the land (Goshen in v4, Ramses District)
They were supposed to be in Egypt for a short time; to escape famine in Canaan.
Canaan was the promised land not Egypt.
The prospered while in Egypt and life became comfortable – they even came to fancy the cuisine – fish, cucumber, garlic, melons, leeks, onions (Numbers 11:5).
They were in no hurry to go back home.
**They only desired to go back home after a new Pharaoh who did not like them stirred/disturbed their comfort (**How we forget fast, until disturbance comes**).
**Like the Israelites, we become comfortable in our jobs, houses, success, relationships, and start thinking we no longer need God. We fast forget about our eternal calling and heavenly Canaan, that Egypt (the world) is not our home.
**Sometimes disaster strikes as a wake-up call from the LORD. After the disaster of slavery, the Israelites started to call on the LORD.
Lest you forget:
Deuteronomy 6:10-12 – v10 When the Lord your God brings you into the land he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, to give you—a land with large, flourishing cities you did not build, v11 houses filled with all kinds of good things you did not provide, wells you did not dig, and vineyards and olive groves you did not plant—then when you eat and are satisfied, v12 be careful that you do not forget the Lord, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.
Deuteronomy 8:11-18 – v11 Be careful that you do not forget the Lord your God, failing to observe his commands, his laws and his decrees that I am giving you this day. v12 Otherwise, when you eat and are satisfied, when you build fine houses and settle down, v13 and when your herds and flocks grow large and your silver and gold increase and all you have is multiplied, v14 then your heart will become proud and you will forget the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. v15 He led you through the vast and dreadful wilderness, that thirsty and waterless land, with its venomous snakes and scorpions. He brought you water out of hard rock. v16 He gave you manna to eat in the wilderness, something your ancestors had never known, to humble and test you so that in the end it might go well with you. v17 You may say to yourself, “My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me.” v18 But remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your ancestors, as it is today.
