Baptism in the Old Testament
Typologies:
1 Peter 3:20-21 shows that Noah was in the ark, going through the water of the flood, as in Christ we go through the water of baptism.
–Peter talks about cleansing of the heart; the washing of conscience. **What makes baptism significant is not becoming wet (removal of dirt), but the PLEDGE; as a symbol of UNRESERVED dedication to God. This is only possible through Christ resurrection who makes us right with God.
2 Peter 2:4-5
Jude 1:5-6
1 Corinthians 10:1-2 shows that the Israelites were baptized/immersed into Moses. That is, they identified with him and the covenant he brought to them.
Jonah 2:5-6 – “Water encompassed me to the point of death. The deep engulfed me……., but you brought my life from the pit oh Lord my God.” This is a type of baptism (death & resurrection).
Jesus quoted Jonah’s experience in Luke 11:29-30.
Baptism in the New Testament
Acts 19:3-5 talks about John’s baptism: Repent and believe in Jesus (NLT)
Jesus identified himself with John’s ministry (of repentance), and identified himself with sinners by fulfilling all righteousness.
**Through baptism, we make a public declaration (Ring) that we belong to Christ and we are not ashamed of Him.
Baptism is a command
Matthew 28:18-20: Through repentance those who believe become disciples of Jesus, and identify with him through baptism. They have a teachable spirit of obedience.
Baptism is the second step of obedience after salvation (Believe – Repent – Baptize). Mark 16:16 EASY
Acts 2:41 Shows that a church grows (body of Christ) when people believe – repent and are baptized into the body of Christ. It also shows we are one or of one body.
Ephesians 4:1-6 (NLT) Shows through Christ we become members of one body, one spirit and one hope. One Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God, and one father.
Baptism remind us that the power of sin over our lives has been BROKEN!
Romans 6:1-15 (NLT) Every chain, shackle, yoke is broken through Christ.
Baptism is done in the name of Jesus/Authority/Command: Acts 2:38, 10:47-48, 19:5
